General Information and Expectations:

  • The magnet reading program is a novels based approach. We will read a variety of novels throughout the year. The novels are on a fourth grade reading level.

  • It is not necessary for your child to keep the reading worksheets in their binder. Reading papers are returned and placed in the take home folder of the binder. The take home folder can be cleaned out nightly.

  • Reading homework is required. The homework is to read 15-20 minutes four nights a week. A calendar is provided in each month's newsletter. Parents need to initial each night that reading homework is completed. The calendars are worth 10 points each month. They are to be turned into the homeroom teacher at the beginning of the next month.

  • Several times during the year students will be working on a project that involves reading. The reading done while completing these projects may count for the calendars.

  • Three to four times a year students will take the Scholastic Reading Inventory test. This test is taken on the computers in our lab. Your child will receive a lexile score. A letter explaining your child's score will be sent home following each administration of the test. To learn more about lexiles visit this site: The Lexile Framework
